9. New Career Academy Offerings at SHS
2023 rang in with the addition of new Career Academy opportunities for SHS Students. The Skilled and Technical Sciences Academy expanded its offerings with the addition of Electrical Technology. Electrical Technology is a community-based program similar in format to SHS's highly popular Diesel Tech program. Through a partnership with WNCC as well as trades partners Snell Services, Robinson Electric, Crescent Electric, NPPD, Roosevelt Public Power, PREMA, Contractors Materials, 3E Electrical Engineering and Equipment, Ace Hardware, and Aulick Industries we are able to make this course available using the Aulick Facility that also houses diesel tech. The course is designed for students interested in pursuing a career as an electrician or those who want to learn more about electrical technology as they pursue other career opportunities in construction trades. It also provides opportunities for students to connect with community partners to pursue skilled trades positions after graduation where they can complete their apprenticeship and journeyman on the job and become certified. Students start the course with a comprehensive safety unit, then learn about industrial, residential and commercial electrical technology with a variety of hands on activities, such as riding in a bucket lift (below).
In addition, the students in this academy also have the opportunity to work on container homes placed on the SHS campus by Aulick Industries. Students have the opportunity to work on framing, electrical, plumbing, insulation, installing sheet rock, flooring and doors and finishing the homes each semester.
The Skilled and Technical Sciences Academy plans to add Plumbing/HVAC courses in the coming year.
